The Cincinnati Bengals made a notable addition to their practice squad during the bye week by signing center Jacob Bayer. Bayer, a rookie from Arkansas State University, has been available since the preseason after initially signing with the Buffalo Bills in May as a college free agent.
Although Bayer”s arrival is not expected to immediately address the team”s recent struggles, Coach Zac Taylor continues to seek solutions following two consecutive games in which the Bengals surrendered a total of 1,078 yards of offense. Despite the team”s defensive issues, Taylor has indicated that he is not considering any changes to his coaching staff.
On Monday, Taylor expressed his confidence in the current coaching staff, stating, “We”ve been through this situation many years and come out the other side, playing for championships, winning divisions, by sticking with what we believe in and not doing what everybody wants you to do.” He reflected on the challenges faced in 2020, emphasizing the importance of perseverance and belief in the team”s personnel.
He added, “I”m thankful that in 2020, they didn”t kick me out of here, so we were able to go to the Super Bowl the next year. And so again, I believe in the people that we”ve hired. I sit in there and watch these guys coach. I know what they”re made of. I know where we can continue to grow. So when you believe in people, you don”t just make a gut reaction from what people want to see that aren”t necessarily a part of it. I understand the frustration.”
This signing comes at a crucial time for the Bengals, who currently hold a season record of 3-6 and face scrutiny over their performance, particularly on defense.
