Gardner-Webb University triumphed over Southeast Missouri State 27-24 in a closely contested game on Saturday, with quarterback Cole Pennington contributing two touchdowns. Pennington”s performance included a 36-yard touchdown run and a 31-yard touchdown pass to Elvin Fofanah, both executed in the first quarter.
Chris Lofton was a key asset for Gardner-Webb, making six catches for 125 yards. As the game progressed, Jax Leatherwood, the quarterback for Southeast Missouri State, connected with Kalvin Gilbert for a 22-yard touchdown pass, narrowing the gap to 24-17 with just over six minutes remaining.
Shortly after, Charlie Viorel added a 22-yard field goal for Gardner-Webb, concluding an eight-play, 67-yard drive that increased their lead to 27-17. Leatherwood capped off the scoring with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Donnie Cheers in the final seconds of the game.
Throughout the game, Pennington showcased his versatility by throwing for 279 yards and rushing for an additional 58 yards on nine carries. Meanwhile, Leatherwood completed 21 of 39 passes for 304 yards, contributing three touchdown passes for Southeast Missouri State.
This victory improved Gardner-Webb”s record to 6-4 overall and 4-2 in the OVC-Big South conference, while Southeast Missouri State fell to 3-7 and 2-4 in the conference standings.
As the season continues, both teams will be looking to build upon their performances and make a push for a strong finish.
