Sauce Gardner made his debut for the Indianapolis Colts in Berlin following a dramatic trade from the New York Jets. The game took place on Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, where Gardner”s presence was immediately felt on the field.
In the first half, Gardner tracked Kyle Pitts into the middle, which opened space for Falcons quarterback Michael Penix Jr. to complete a 16-yard touchdown pass to Drake London. This play allowed Atlanta to take a 14-13 lead over the Colts at halftime, with linebacker Germaine Pratt in coverage.
Gardner”s transition to the Colts came after a whirlwind week that saw him traded for two first-round draft picks and receiver Adonai Mitchell. Known as one of the NFL”s elite cover cornerbacks, Gardner earned All-Pro honors in each of his first two seasons with the Jets. Although his performance dipped last season and into this one, the change of scenery with a new defense could provide the spark he needs to regain his elite form.
Selected fourth overall in the 2022 draft, Gardner made three solo tackles in the first half of the game. His teammate, safety Camryn Bynum, noted that Gardner has been diligently studying the game, describing him as a “student of the game.”
The Falcons initially found success running the ball against the Colts, especially with rookie Bijan Robinson, who rushed for 47 yards on nine carries. This was particularly notable as the Colts played without three-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle DeForest Buckner, who was placed on injured reserve due to a neck injury earlier in the week.
The game in Berlin highlights the ongoing adjustments teams must make throughout the season, especially with key players shifting rosters. Gardner”s performance will be closely monitored as he seeks to establish himself in his new role with the Colts.
