Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne has received a one-game suspension without pay from the NFL following an incident involving Amon-Ra St. Brown, a receiver for the Detroit Lions, during their game. The suspension was announced on Monday, a day after Payne was ejected from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct.
During the second quarter of the Commanders” 44-22 defeat to the Lions, Payne was penalized for his actions against St. Brown. As a result, he will miss the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins next Sunday, which will take place in Spain.
The NFL cited that Payne”s suspension was in accordance with regulations that address any behavior deemed inconsistent with the principles of sportsmanship. This includes actions such as throwing punches or striking an opponent in a dangerous manner. Additionally, the league referenced specific rules prohibiting any form of striking to the head or neck of an opposing player.
Payne has the option to appeal the suspension, but the Commanders are currently facing challenges as they have lost five consecutive games, holding a record of 3-7 for the season.
