Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne has been suspended for one game without pay by the NFL. The league announced the decision on Monday following an incident during the game against the Detroit Lions on Sunday night.
During the second quarter of the matchup, which ended in a 44-22 loss for Washington, Payne was ejected for unsportsmanlike conduct after hitting Lions receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown. This action led to the suspension, which will cause Payne to miss the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins in Spain.
The NFL cited Payne”s punishment under a rule that governs actions contrary to the principles of sportsmanship. This includes rules against throwing punches or striking an opponent in the head or neck area. While the suspension is effective immediately, Payne has the option to appeal the decision.
The Commanders are currently facing difficulties, having lost their last five games, and this suspension adds to their challenges as they prepare for next week”s match against Miami.
As the season progresses, the team will need to regroup and find ways to overcome these setbacks, both on and off the field.
