Bills Eye Raiders” Edge Rushers as Trade Deadline Approaches

The Buffalo Bills are exploring trade options for edge rushers as the NFL trade deadline approaches, particularly looking at the Las Vegas Raiders for potential help.

In their recent Week 9 victory against the Kansas City Chiefs, the Bills faced a significant setback when defensive end Michael Hoecht suffered a season-ending torn Achilles. This injury adds to an already challenging situation for the Bills, who are now missing Hoecht, Ed Oliver, and DeWayne Carter for the remainder of the regular season. Additionally, T.J. Sanders remains on injured reserve, while DaQuan Jones is working his way back from a calf injury.

According to Albert Breer of Sports Illustrated, the Raiders are willing to part with former No. 7 overall pick Tyree Wilson. Breer stated, “One interesting name on the trade block that I didn”t mention in my Friday notes is former No. 7 pick Tyree Wilson. He”s clearly not what Vegas hoped for in 2023, but there”s still some promise for the 25-year-old as a supersized edge who can bump inside and rush on passing downs.”

In addition to Wilson, the Raiders are also reportedly open to trading fellow edge rusher Malcolm Koonce, as noted by Ian Rapoport from NFL Network. While Wilson has not met expectations thus far, his addition could still provide value. Over his career, Wilson has recorded 10 sacks across more than two seasons, including two this year, showcasing his versatility to play both inside and outside, which would greatly benefit the Bills” defense.

Koonce has shown potential, especially following a breakout season in 2023 where he secured eight sacks, although he missed all of 2024 due to a torn ACL. This season, Koonce has struggled with just one sack, but he might regain his form as he continues to recover from his injury.

With Koonce set to become a free agent in 2026 and Wilson having one year left on his contract, the Bills could find both players to be decent options without breaking the bank. Given the Bills” tight salary cap situation, both players come with affordable contracts, making them appealing targets. Neither player is likely to command more than a Day 3 draft pick in a trade, although Wilson may be slightly more expensive due to his contract situation and past performance.

Acquiring one of the Raiders” edge rushers could prove to be a wise decision for the Bills as they navigate the challenges posed by their current injury-riddled defense.
