Guilford College Football Team Cancels Season After Postgame Fight

The Guilford College Quakers football team has decided to forfeit its last game of the season following a fight that occurred after their 21-27 loss to Averett University. This decision was mandated by the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), which stated that the “post-game altercation between the two programs does not uphold the standards of sportsmanship, respect, and conduct expected within the ODAC.”

As a result of the incident, Averett University will also forfeit its final game for the season. In a statement, ODAC Commissioner Brad Bankston emphasized the importance of sportsmanship and respect, noting, “While competition is at the heart of what we do, the integrity with which we compete defines who we are. The actions following Saturday”s contest did not reflect those values, and this decision underscores our commitment to maintaining the standards our conference represents.”

Both schools have been acknowledged for their cooperation and willingness to engage in dialogue leading up to this decision. The forfeiture serves as a reminder of the values that the ODAC aims to uphold, ensuring that sportsmanship remains a core aspect of athletic competition.
