The Washington Commanders have faced considerable difficulties on defense this season, prompting head coach Dan Quinn to implement a significant change following a blowout loss to the Detroit Lions. On Monday, Quinn revealed that he would assume play-calling responsibilities from defensive coordinator Joe Whitt, effectively demoting him while keeping him on the coaching staff. Whitt will transition from the sideline to the coaching booth for the upcoming Week 11 matchup against the Miami Dolphins in Spain.
This decision comes in the wake of Washington”s disappointing 44-22 defeat to Detroit at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. Quinn addressed the media, stating, “When something”s not working, we shift from the question of why isn”t it working to what do we need to do to get it right? Right now, that”ll call for some change.” He further expressed confidence in his ability to lead the defense, acknowledging Whitt”s professionalism in accepting the change.
Quinn”s reputation as a defensive strategist is well-established, having previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks during their Super Bowl-winning season in 2013. Following that success, he took the helm as head coach of the Atlanta Falcons before joining the Dallas Cowboys as their defensive coordinator after his tenure with Atlanta ended. Since joining the Commanders as head coach last year, Quinn led the team to the NFC Championship Game, but the current season has not unfolded as hoped.
This year, the Commanders have allowed an average of 28.0 points per game, ranking them 29th in the NFL. Their defensive struggles have been particularly pronounced, as they have surrendered 38 points or more in three of their last four contests. Adding to the team”s challenges, quarterback Jayden Daniels is expected to be sidelined for several games due to a dislocated elbow sustained last week, further complicating Washington”s efforts to turn the season around.
With the Commanders now sitting at 3-7 after the loss to Detroit, the upcoming game against the Dolphins presents an opportunity for Quinn to showcase his defensive acumen and attempt to shift the momentum in favor of his team.
