Two Wiregrass Coaches Resign After 2025 Football Season

The 2025-26 regular season of high school football wrapped up over the Halloween weekend, leading to significant changes among coaching staff in the Wiregrass area. In a notable move, Jamel Harris, head coach of the Geneva Panthers, has resigned after three seasons at the helm.

Harris, a former graduate of Wicksburg and an SEC standout, concluded his tenure with a record of 4-26, including a tough 1-9 season this year. The Geneva program has faced ongoing struggles with depth and rebuilding efforts, and Harris noted that the expected commitment from players was not as strong as he had hoped. He expressed his feelings about the situation, stating, “I feel like it”s maybe, maybe time for them, the kids, to hear a different voice, and maybe some of the other things that could happen better.”

Despite the team”s challenges, Harris refrained from using the limited roster or talent disparity as excuses for their performance. He shared his deep affection for the players, emphasizing their dedication amidst adversity: “I love those kids and I love how hard and all the adversity they had to try to keep going through and kept going and kept coming to practice, kept trying to play hard, doing the best. But I just felt like, at this time, it was just time for me to step aside.”

Having been involved in football since the age of seven, Harris does not intend to leave the sport entirely. He mentioned that he would consider future coaching opportunities if the right situation arises. His decision to resign was not made lightly; he took the time to pray with his wife before finalizing his choice, wanting to ensure the school had ample time to search for a new leader for the program. Michael Crews, principal of Geneva, expressed gratitude for Harris”s dedication and the effort he instilled in his players during his tenure.

Meanwhile, in Rehobeth, Toby Greene has also submitted his resignation after discussions with school administration and the Houston County School System. Greene has stepped down from both his head coaching and athletic director roles but will continue at the school as a driver”s education and physical education teacher. When approached for further comments, Greene declined to elaborate on his future plans.

The school system is moving swiftly in its search for new coaching leadership, with interviews already in progress and the position for head coach posted online. Administrators are seeking individuals who can inject fresh energy and enthusiasm into the program.
