Ja”Marr Chase, wide receiver for the Cincinnati Bengals, has been suspended for one game due to an incident involving spitting at Jalen Ramsey, a cornerback for the Pittsburgh Steelers, during a recent match. This suspension was announced by the NFL on Monday and will keep Chase off the field for the upcoming game against the New England Patriots.
The incident occurred in the fourth quarter of the Bengals” 34-12 defeat to the Steelers. According to the league”s statement, Chase violated Rule 12, Section 3, Article 1, which addresses unsportsmanlike conduct. Ramsey claimed that Chase spat on him after he was ejected for a hit on the Bengals receiver. “He spit on me, so it”s up,” Ramsey stated to reporters. “I don”t give a f— about football after that, respectfully.”
Chase, however, refuted these allegations, asserting, “I ain”t never opened my mouth to that guy.” He added that their exchanges throughout the game may have contributed to Ramsey”s reaction. Despite Chase”s denial, social media footage appeared to show him spitting at Ramsey.
Chase has the option to appeal the suspension, which notably mirrors the penalty given to Jalen Carter of the Philadelphia Eagles earlier this season for a similar infraction. If the suspension stands, it will cost Chase a game check of $448,333 along with a $58,824 roster bonus.
Bengals head coach Zac Taylor commented on the situation, expressing his disappointment. “It”s like we are trying to make something out of this situation. It”s the only thing that”s kind of upset me as I”m sitting in here,” Taylor told the media. He emphasized that while Chase is a crucial part of the organization, he must take responsibility for his actions.
Chase has had an impressive season, leading the league in receptions and ranking second in receiving yards, with five touchdowns to his name. However, his absence will be felt as the Bengals seek to turn around their disappointing 3-7 record following three consecutive losses.
