San Francisco 49ers cornerback Deommodore Lenoir recently spoke with Matt Maiocco on “49ers Talk,” detailing his journey from a challenging rookie season to becoming a team captain.
During his first year in the NFL, Lenoir experienced significant playing time early on, but his involvement diminished as the season progressed. Reflecting on this period, he explained, “I hit that rookie slump, hit that rookie wall. It was something I had to overcome, really just starting with looking within first.”
Lenoir emphasized his determination to improve by not making excuses for his lack of playing time. Instead, he focused on putting in the effort to become a player that the coaching staff would want on the field. “I had to really push myself to be one of the guys on film, like, “We have to play this guy,”” he remarked.
Since his rookie season, Lenoir”s performance has significantly improved. After starting only two games in his initial year, he has since been in the starting lineup for the 49ers 56 times since the beginning of the 2022 NFL season, amassing eight interceptions and 31 passes defended.
His exceptional play led to his appointment as a team captain for the first time ahead of the 2025 NFL season, highlighting his emergence as a respected leader among a roster filled with experienced veterans.
Lenoir attributed his growth to holding himself to a higher standard and being more self-critical. “After my first year, that offseason, I moved to Arizona and focused on my film, analyzing where I could improve and learn the scheme,” he explained. “I took that time to reflect, thinking, “Maybe I need to be harder on myself here.” That was the approach I took.”
This commitment to self-improvement became evident during a recent game against the Arizona Cardinals, where Lenoir intercepted a pass from quarterback Jacoby Brissett and returned it for 64 yards. Now, he is preparing to face quarterback Bryce Young and the Carolina Panthers in an upcoming Monday Night Football matchup.
Lenoir”s story serves as an inspiring example of resilience and dedication in the face of adversity, demonstrating how he has transformed from a struggling rookie to a vital leader for the San Francisco 49ers.
