Joel Klatt Names Fernando Mendoza as Top Heisman Candidate After Big Ten Win

After a stunning victory in the Big Ten Championship Game, Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza is emerging as the frontrunner for the prestigious Heisman Trophy, according to FOX Sports analyst Joel Klatt. Mendoza”s performance against Ohio State contributed significantly to Indiana”s first conference title in 58 years, solidifying his position in the Heisman race.

In the latest episode of the “Joel Klatt Show,” Klatt emphasized Mendoza”s remarkable achievements, stating, “Think about what this guy has done. He”s No. 1 in the country. They”re 13-0. He made throw after throw after throw in big moments on the road all year long. It didn”t matter the opponent.” He highlighted Mendoza”s ability to defeat the No. 2 team in the nation at a neutral site and the No. 5 team in their own stadium.

Klatt asserted, “No other player has a resume like Fernando Mendoza, and, candidly, it”s not even close. Anybody that argues differently is wrong. I don”t know how else to say it.” While Mendoza”s overall statistics may not be the most impressive, with the team scoring only 13 points in their narrow victory over Ohio State, his ability to deliver in crucial moments stood out.

In the championship game, Mendoza completed 15 of 23 passes for 222 yards, including one touchdown and one interception. His critical third and fourth-down conversions, where he went 7-of-10, were key to Indiana”s success. One notable play was a 17-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Elijah Surratt, which provided Indiana with a lead in the third quarter. Additionally, a pivotal 33-yard completion to wide receiver Charlie Becker helped secure the victory.

Klatt described these moments as Mendoza”s “Heisman moments,” particularly commending the critical throw to Becker late in the game as a standout play. “He made giant throws in that second half, giant Heisman Trophy style throws,” Klatt noted.

Mendoza”s impressive stats further bolster his Heisman candidacy. He has thrown for 2,980 yards this season, leading the nation in touchdown passes and ranking first among power conference quarterbacks in yards per attempt. However, Klatt stressed that Mendoza”s performance in high-pressure situations is what truly sets him apart. The Big Ten Championship Game marked the fourth time this season that he has excelled in late-game scenarios away from home, including victories at Iowa, Oregon, and a comeback win against Penn State.

Reflecting on Mendoza”s clutch performances, Klatt stated, “What did Fernando Mendoza and the passing game do in every one of those scenarios? They performed and delivered.” This consistent ability to rise to the occasion has positioned Mendoza as a serious contender for the Heisman Trophy ahead of the ceremony on Saturday.
