Dylan Lonergan Enters Transfer Portal After One Season with BC Football

After spending just one season at Boston College, quarterback Dylan Lonergan has chosen to enter the transfer portal. The former redshirt sophomore joined BC from Alabama and played in 10 games during the 2025 season, amassing a total of 2,025 passing yards, along with 12 touchdowns and five interceptions, leading the Eagles in all passing statistics.

At 6 feet 2 inches and 211 pounds, Lonergan”s tenure at BC saw him benched following a tough 41-10 defeat to Clemson on October 11, which allowed redshirt senior Grayson James to take over as the starting quarterback against UConn the following week. Lonergan returned to the field for a significant portion of the Eagles” loss to SMU on November 8 and made a strong comeback the next week, starting against Georgia Tech. He completed 26 of 40 passes for 362 yards, scoring two touchdowns without any interceptions.

Despite these performances, Lonergan decided it was time to find a new program, a decision made shortly after BC”s season finale, a 34-12 victory over Syracuse, where he played briefly before injuring his throwing hand. This injury allowed James to finish the game, which marked BC”s only FBS and Atlantic Coast Conference win in 2025.

Lonergan”s exit is particularly impactful given the current state of BC”s quarterback roster. Presently, the only quarterback who has taken snaps in a real game is true freshman Shaker Reisig.

In a podcast on December 9 with Jon Meterparel, the voice of BC football, head coach Bill O”Brien addressed Lonergan”s departure. O”Brien expressed understanding of Lonergan”s choice, stating, “You know, at the end of the day, these guys at that position, they make the best decisions for themselves… I couldn”t guarantee him the starting job. I guaranteed him, certainly, an opportunity. I liked Dylan. I think he”s a really good player, and he”s doing what”s best for him.” O”Brien”s remarks reflected both gratitude for Lonergan”s contributions and an acknowledgment of the player”s need to secure a starting position.

The unexpected split between BC and Lonergan has raised eyebrows among fans, especially considering O”Brien”s previous recruitment of the quarterback while at Alabama under former head coach Nick Saban. Additionally, BC has seen several players announce their intentions to enter the transfer portal, with Lonergan”s decision being the most notable.

As the program looks to the future, the focus will shift to how they will fill the gaps left by departing players, including Lonergan, during this offseason.
