Clark Lea, head coach of the Vanderbilt Commodores, has put forth a compelling argument for why quarterback Diego Pavia deserves to be this year”s Heisman Trophy winner. After an impressive season, Pavia has found himself among the four finalists for the prestigious award, competing against notable players such as quarterback Julian Sayin from Ohio State, Fernando Mendoza from Indiana, as well as running back Jeremiyah Love from Notre Dame.
The Heisman Trophy will be awarded during a special ceremony that celebrates the finalists as a precursor to the college bowl games and the College Football Playoff. As Pavia prepares for this significant night, he has made appearances on various media platforms alongside Coach Lea, who expressed strong support for his quarterback”s candidacy.
“There”s no better player. There”s no one more deserving, and obviously, I”m his coach, and I believe in him more than I believe in anybody. I”ve seen him do it. I”ve seen his process. Statistically, he”s the best,” Lea stated during their segment.
Pavia had an outstanding season in 2025, completing 242 of 340 passes for 3,192 yards and achieving 27 touchdowns. His quarterback rating of 171.5 marks the pinnacle of his collegiate career. However, Coach Lea emphasized that Pavia”s contributions went beyond just statistics. “The impact he”s had for our team is remarkable. When you measure that across the other players up for the award, he”s been incredible in that regard. This also ties back to the emotional connection he”s built with our team,” Lea added. “He understands that winning is a team effort, not solely an individual accomplishment.”
SEC. Unfortunately, their efforts did not earn them a spot in the College Football Playoff.
As the NFL Draft approaches, Pavia is expected to be a valuable asset, although his exact draft position remains uncertain. Meanwhile, Mendoza from Indiana is projected to be a top-three pick in the upcoming draft. As the Heisman ceremony approaches, all eyes will be on Pavia, who, despite the odds favoring Mendoza, has strong backing from his coach to claim the trophy.
