The Kansas City Chiefs are gearing up to host the Denver Broncos on Christmas Day, but they will be without their top two quarterbacks. With Patrick Mahomes placed on injured reserve due to a torn ACL last week, the team will now rely on third-string quarterback Chris Oladokun after Gardner Minshew sustained a knee injury during a game against the Tennessee Titans on Sunday.
Although Minshew avoided a tear to his ACL, he was still sidelined with a season-ending injury, leaving Oladokun as the only available option. Oladokun, a fourth-year quarterback, was drafted in the seventh round by the Pittsburgh Steelers out of South Dakota State in 2022. He was elevated from the practice squad and completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards in relief of Minshew during the Titans game. However, he also faced challenges, taking four sacks that resulted in a loss of 44 yards.
This will not be Oladokun”s first encounter with the Broncos, as he made his regular-season debut against them last season, where he recorded one rush for five yards and suffered a sack during a brief appearance in a game that ended with the Broncos defeating the Chiefs” backups 38-0.
To bolster their quarterback depth, the Chiefs signed Shane Buechele off the practice squad of the Buffalo Bills on Monday. Buechele is expected to serve as the backup to Oladokun in the upcoming matchup against the Broncos.
