Caleb Hawkins and Ashton Gray to Enter Transfer Portal After New Mexico Bowl Win

In a surprising turn of events shortly after the North Texas Mean Green secured their first bowl victory since 2013 by defeating San Diego State in the New Mexico Bowl, it was reported that running backs Caleb Hawkins and Ashton Gray are set to enter the transfer portal.

Both players had impressive performances in the bowl game, with Hawkins carrying the ball 30 times for 198 yards and two touchdowns, while Gray contributed with 16 carries for 152 yards and also scored two touchdowns. In addition to his rushing success, Hawkins made three receptions for 25 yards and a receiving touchdown.

Hawkins, a true freshman, was a key player for the Mean Green throughout the season. He earned the title of American Conference Rookie of the Year, was named to the first team all-conference, and led the FBS in rushing touchdowns. Over the course of the season, he amassed a total of 1,432 rushing yards, 370 receiving yards, and 29 touchdowns from both rushing and receiving.

With Eric Morris leaving to coach at Oklahoma State, the prospect of several players departing from the Mean Green appears likely. The potential transfer of star quarterback Drew Mestemaker will be another significant development to watch in the coming days.

This news marks a pivotal moment for the North Texas football program as it navigates the complex landscape of college athletics and player movement.
