Miami Hurricanes Upset Ohio State in Cotton Bowl to Advance to Playoffs

The Miami Hurricanes celebrated a significant victory on Wednesday night, defeating the Ohio State Buckeyes 24-14 in the 2025 Cotton Bowl. This triumph propels the Hurricanes into the College Football Playoff semifinals, marking a pivotal moment in their season.

Following the game, defensive back Keionte Scott and running back Mark Fletcher Jr. shared their thoughts on the match and their performances.

When asked about his running style and the effectiveness of the offensive line, Fletcher emphasized their hard work. “The guys up front are the hardest-working group in the trenches,” he stated. “We knew we needed to show up big in this game. If you look at our tape, the tight ends and receivers were also moving people out of the way, allowing me to choose a hole and run.”

Fletcher faced a challenging moment when he fumbled the ball. He reflected on the incident, noting, “I wouldn”t say it was deja vu, but it”s football; it happens. My teammates, even the defensive players, encouraged me to keep my head up. It”s all about how you bounce back.”

Scott”s pivotal moment came with a pick-six. He explained, “It was on film for sure. With all the skill players on one side, I knew the ball would come my way. Once the tight end motioned, I made up my mind to go for it. I trusted my teammates behind me to play fast.” He expressed the excitement of scoring, saying, “I was full of emotions. I took a moment to acknowledge the sideline, and it was just a fun experience.”

Fletcher also highlighted the message from Coach Mario Cristobal regarding their physical approach. “He wanted us to be the most physical team,” Fletcher said. “He emphasized that to both the offense and defense. We matched the intensity and just went out there, played loose, and had fun.”

As the game progressed, Fletcher noted the trust in their running back group, particularly with teammate Marty Brown, who made crucial runs. “Our coach reminded us that while one running back is on the field, there are eight of us in the room,” Fletcher remarked. “To see my brother out there, I told him I needed him, and he had my back. We have the best running back room in the country.”

Reflecting on the significance of beating the defending national champions, Scott stated, “The program was serious about what they wanted to achieve. Everyone had their eyes on the same goal. Coach Cristobal keeps us focused, and while we”re grateful for this victory, we are never satisfied.”

Fletcher, who has been with the program since its inception, echoed Scott”s sentiments. “I trusted the plan and vision. Coach told me we would get this program back to national championship status, and we will continue to take it one game at a time,” he added.

Looking ahead, Fletcher acknowledged the special moments shared during their time in Texas. “It”s extra special because we won, and we were 1-0. That”s always the goal,” he stated.

When asked about the legacy of Miami football, Scott shared, “I watched the 1991 Cotton Bowl before the game. It was fun, but we focus on the 2025 Hurricanes. That”s it.”
