Justin Jefferson expresses support for quarterback J.J. McCarthy

The Minnesota Vikings face a significant decision this offseason regarding their young quarterback, J.J. McCarthy. As they consider whether to continue with McCarthy or explore other options, his performance has been a mixed bag. After missing his entire rookie season due to injury, McCarthy”s second year has also been turbulent, marked by both notable achievements and inconsistencies.

In nine starts this season, McCarthy accumulated 1,450 passing yards, 11 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. While he has not yet established himself as a reliable starting quarterback in the league, there have been moments that suggest potential. Among those advocating for his continued presence is star wide receiver Justin Jefferson.

Heading into Week 18, Jefferson expressed his desire for McCarthy to remain as the starting quarterback, saying, “Of course I would love for him to be here. Of course I would love for him to be the quarterback. Especially off this year. I feel like he needs to show everybody and prove to everybody that he is that top-tier quarterback. So I would love to have him. I would love to work with him and show everybody that he is that No. 1 guy.”

Jefferson also mentioned plans to train with McCarthy during the offseason to strengthen their chemistry and address certain habits that may have hindered McCarthy”s performance throughout the year. This comment comes after Jefferson recorded the least productive season of his career in 2025, working primarily with McCarthy as his quarterback.

Despite the challenges, Jefferson seems to recognize potential in McCarthy, which may be a vote of confidence for the Vikings as they consider their options. The front office and coaching staff will ultimately decide McCarthy”s fate, but Jefferson”s endorsement carries significant weight within the organization. With the Vikings having cycled through different starting quarterbacks over the past three seasons, continuity may be a crucial factor as they move forward.
