Lufkin Coach Abseck Discusses Panthers” Playoff Prospects After Win

During a recent question-and-answer session, Lufkin head football coach Carl Abseck spoke about his team”s recent performance and playoff scenarios. Following their 31-16 victory against Beaumont United, where running back Kenneth Waters rushed for 247 yards and scored four touchdowns, Lufkin is now tied for second place in District 10-5A Division I with a record of 3-2.

Coach Abseck emphasized the competitive nature of the district, noting that many teams remain in contention for playoff spots. “It demonstrates that this is a very competitive district,” he stated. “If you”re not prepared any given week, you can easily be defeated. Other than one team at 2-7, the worst record is 5-4, showcasing our competitiveness.”

Looking ahead to their upcoming opponent, Galveston Ball, who currently sits at 2-7, Abseck acknowledged the challenges they face due to a new coaching staff and significant changes from last season. “They are making progress with their new scheme, and they have some talented players, including senior receiver Juwaan Woodbury and junior quarterback Coreion Sanders,” he explained.

Abseck also provided insight into Galveston Ball”s defensive strategy, noting their switch to a three-down front. “They have a solid, aggressive line that will blitz, trying to create pressure,” he added. “Despite their record, they play aggressively and pursue the football effectively.”

Reflecting on his own team”s performance, Abseck expressed satisfaction with the offense”s ability to score consistently, particularly in the second half. He praised Kenneth Waters for his exceptional play and highlighted the offensive line”s improvement. “We maintained possession and moved the ball effectively, which is crucial for our success,” he stated.

The defense also received commendation for limiting Beaumont United”s quarterback, Raphael Deshotel, to lower numbers after a strong performance the prior week. “Holding them to 10 points is commendable, especially considering their quarterback”s previous success,” Abseck noted. “We applied pressure, which forced him into making earlier throws, leading to turnovers.”

As the season nears its conclusion, Lufkin”s playoff aspirations hinge on their ability to secure a win against Galveston Ball, with several teams still vying for spots in the postseason.
