BC Lions Extend Contract for Kicker Sean Whyte for 2026 Season

BC Lions kicker Sean Whyte, a native of White Rock, has secured a contract extension for one more year with his hometown team in the Canadian Football League (CFL). The talented kicker, who achieved a career-high field goal percentage of 95.1 in 2025 by successfully converting 39 of 41 attempts, has been recognized as a West Division All-CFL selection for three consecutive seasons.

This upcoming season will mark Whyte”s eighth with the BC Lions and his 18th overall in the CFL. At 40 years old, Whyte expressed his enthusiasm for continuing to play for the team he cherishes. “It”s fantastic. I didn”t think I”d play for this long… to play for my hometown and just to see the excitement with my family — it”s pretty cool,” Whyte stated on January 7. “I don”t want to go anywhere else. I just feel very lucky that I get an opportunity to keep playing the game I love. Very lucky.”

Last year, Whyte climbed the league”s record books, starting the 2026 season as the all-time leader in field goal accuracy at 88.8 percent, having converted 557 of 627 attempts across 241 regular season games. He ranks ninth in CFL history for both career points and field goals, with 2,282 points and 557 field goals, respectively. Since rejoining the Lions before the 2022 season, Whyte has made 175 of 186 field goal attempts for a notable accuracy of 94.0 percent, leading the league in this category for the past three years.

In addition to his impressive statistics, Whyte was the West Division nominee for CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player and an All-CFL selection in both 2023 and 2024, as noted in a team release. With 828 points accumulated during his time with the Lions (2009-10, 2022-present), he currently holds the third position on the franchise”s all-time scoring list, trailing only CFL Hall of Fame inductees Lui Passaglia and Paul McCallum.

Before his second stint with the Lions, Whyte played for the Montreal Alouettes from 2011 to 2014, where he earned East Division All-CFL honors in his third year. He then joined the Edmonton Eskimos for six seasons, solidifying his status as one of the league”s elite kickers. His contributions helped the team secure a Grey Cup victory in 2015, during which he achieved a stellar 90.2 percent success rate on field goal attempts.

Looking ahead, Whyte is committed to enhancing his performance, with aspirations for a perfect season. “My goal this year is just to get stronger. This offseason I”m really, really going to train hard,” he remarked. “I still have the fire in me to compete, and playing at home for the BC Lions… there”s nothing better.”
