BC Lions Extend Kicker Sean Whyte”s Contract for Another Season

The BC Lions have announced a one-year contract extension for kicker Sean Whyte, allowing the White Rock native to continue playing for his hometown Canadian Football League team. This decision comes after a standout season in 2025, where Whyte achieved a remarkable field goal percentage of 95.1, converting on 39 of 41 attempts, leading the league in this category.

At 40 years old, Whyte is set to enter his eighth season with the Lions and his 18th overall in the CFL. Speaking about his extension, Whyte expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “It”s fantastic. I didn”t think I”d play for this long … to play for my home town and just to see the excitement with my family — it”s pretty cool.” He added, “I don”t want to go anywhere else. I just feel very lucky that I get an opportunity to keep playing the game I love. Very lucky.”

Throughout the previous season, Whyte made significant strides in the league”s record books. He begins 2026 as the all-time leader in field goal accuracy, having connected on 557 of 627 attempts across 241 regular season games, resulting in an impressive accuracy rate of 88.8 percent. His career totals of 2,282 points and 557 field goals rank ninth in CFL history.

Since rejoining the BC Lions prior to the 2022 season, Whyte has successfully converted 175 of 186 field goal attempts, which translates to a 94.0 percent success rate. He has led the league in field goal percentage for three consecutive years and was nominated for the CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player award, earning All-CFL honors in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

With 828 points scored during his time with the Lions, Whyte ranks third on the franchise”s all-time scoring list, trailing only Lui Passaglia and Paul McCallum, both of whom are members of the Canadian Football Hall of Fame.

Before his current stint with the Lions, Whyte played for the Montreal Alouettes from 2011 to 2014, where he earned East Division All-CFL recognition. He then spent six seasons with the Edmonton Eskimos, further solidifying his reputation as one of the top kickers in the league. While with Edmonton, he contributed to the team”s Grey Cup victory in 2015 and achieved a field goal percentage of 90.2, making 195 of 216 attempts.

Looking ahead, Whyte is determined to continue his hard work and training with hopes of achieving a perfect season. “My goal this year is just to get stronger. This off season I”m really really going to train hard,” he shared. “I still have the fire in me to compete and playing at home for the BC Lions … (there”s) nothing better.”
