BC Lions Extend Contract of Kicker Sean Whyte for 2026 Season

The BC Lions have officially signed kicker Sean Whyte to a one-year contract extension, ensuring that the White Rock native will remain with his hometown team for at least another season. Whyte, who topped the Canadian Football League (CFL) with an impressive field goal percentage of 95.1, successfully converted 39 out of 41 attempts during the 2025 season.

This extension marks Whyte”s eighth season with the Lions and his 18th overall in the CFL. The 40-year-old kicker expressed his excitement about continuing to play in his hometown, stating, “It”s fantastic. I didn”t think I”d play for this long … to play for my hometown and just to see the excitement with my family — it”s pretty cool.” He added, “I don”t want to go anywhere else. I just feel very lucky that I get an opportunity to keep playing the game I love. Very lucky.”

Entering the 2026 season, Whyte holds the record for the highest career field goal accuracy in league history at 88.8 percent, having successfully made 557 out of 627 attempts across 241 regular season games. His impressive career statistics also include 2,282 points and 557 field goals, both ranking ninth on the all-time CFL list.

Since rejoining the Lions in 2022, Whyte has maintained his status as one of the league”s elite kickers, converting 175 of 186 field goal attempts for a 94.0 percent success rate. He has led the league in field goal percentage for the past three years and has been recognized as the West Division nominee for the CFL Most Outstanding Special Teams Player, as well as an All-CFL selection in both the 2023 and 2024 seasons.

With a total of 828 points scored during his time with the Lions, Whyte ranks third in the club”s all-time scoring list, trailing only legends Lui Passaglia and Paul McCallum. After his initial tenure with the Lions, Whyte spent four seasons with the Montreal Alouettes, where he earned East Division All-CFL honors, before moving to the Edmonton Eskimos for six seasons, where he played a vital role in their Grey Cup victory in 2015.

Looking ahead, Whyte is committed to maintaining his performance and has set goals for the upcoming season. “My goal this year is just to get stronger. This offseason I”m really, really going to train hard,” he remarked. “I still have the fire in me to compete and playing at home for the BC Lions … (there”s) nothing better.”
