A former starting cornerback for the Texas A&M Aggies, Jayvon Thomas, has officially transferred to the SMU Mustangs, an ACC contender. This decision comes after his junior year with Texas A&M, which concluded with a disappointing home loss to the Miami Hurricanes, marking the end of their season in the first round of the College Football Playoff.
Thomas made his announcement on December 23, seeking a new opportunity closer to his roots in Dallas, Texas. Before his time at Texas A&M, he was a highly regarded four-star recruit from South Oak Cliff High School in Dallas, where he excelled as a two-way player at running back and cornerback. He was recognized as the 13th-ranked cornerback in the Class of 2023.
During his tenure at Texas A&M, Thomas made an immediate impact, participating in nine games as a freshman and earning a starting position against Ole Miss. Although he faced challenges in his first season, he started four games in the subsequent year. However, his role diminished in the latter half of the season, and he only played a limited number of defensive snaps in 2025. This decline in playing time contributed to his decision to enter the transfer portal.
At SMU, Thomas will have a chance to compete for a starting position in 2026, as the Mustangs are coming off a successful season where they won the ACC title in 2024 and achieved a 9-4 record in 2025. Thomas”s arrival adds depth to a cornerback group that saw key players like Deuce Harmon, who led the team in cornerback snaps, declare for the NFL Draft.
Thomas will likely compete for the CB2 position against fellow Mustangs William Nettles and Jaelyn Davis-Robinson, both of whom are returning after contributing to the cornerback rotation. Davis-Robinson previously played at LSU, while Nettles gained experience as a true sophomore. With a total of 33 tackles and one interception during his three seasons at Texas A&M, Thomas looks to further his development under SMU”s defensive coordinator, Scott Symons.
This move signifies a fresh start for Thomas as he aims to make a significant impact in the ACC and help the Mustangs pursue another conference title.
