Giants” Cam Skattebo Critiques Rookies” Attitudes Due to NIL Earnings

New York Giants running back Cam Skattebo has expressed concerns about the changing attitudes of NFL rookies, attributing this shift to the financial gains players make through Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) deals during their college careers. In a recent interview on the “Roommates Show,” Skattebo noted that many newcomers to the league enter with a sense of entitlement after earning millions while still in college.

“The rookies that come in have made $2-$3 million in college; they think they are hot stuff,” Skattebo stated. He emphasized that this mindset can lead to conflicts with veteran players who have worked hard to establish themselves in the league.

Although Skattebo clarified that he was not referring to his fellow rookies on the Giants, he has observed a general trend among newcomers who feel they do not need to follow traditional rookie protocols. “You can just tell by the way these college kids act now. Some people behave appropriately, while others disregard the concept of being a rookie,” he explained.

Skattebo, who is 23 years old, reminisced about his own rookie experience, stating that he embraced his responsibilities and listened to his veteran teammates. “I got rookie duties because I”m a rookie, and I”m not going to refuse. If my vets ask me to grab snacks for the running back room, I”m going to do it,” he said. He highlighted the contrast with some rookies who outright refuse similar requests, saying, “Some rookies will tell you, “Bro, I”m not going to get you snacks. You can get your own snacks.”” This attitude, according to Skattebo, reflects a broader issue within the current generation of NFL rookies.

As a fourth-round draft pick from Arizona State, Skattebo made a significant impact during his rookie season, accumulating 410 rushing yards and five touchdowns in just eight games before suffering a season-ending injury. He also made 24 receptions for 207 yards and two receiving touchdowns.

As the NFL evolves with the integration of NIL earnings into the college sports landscape, it remains to be seen how these financial opportunities will continue to influence the attitudes and behaviors of future rookies entering the league.
