After two seasons in the broadcast booth, Tom Brady has become more at ease with his role as a color commentator. However, an NFL analyst has identified a notable flaw in his broadcasting technique. While Brady excels at analyzing plays for the audience, he still needs to refine his approach to discussing situational strategy.
Jimmy Traina from Sports Illustrated pointed out that Brady sometimes overlooks crucial in-game decisions that warrant discussion. For instance, he referenced a moment late in the third quarter during the Los Angeles Rams” game against the Seattle Seahawks. Following a touchdown that narrowed the score to 31-26 with 2:06 remaining, there was no analysis on whether the Rams should attempt a two-point conversion to bring the score closer to 31-28.
Traina emphasized that while Brady did not need to explicitly state that the Rams should go for two points, the absence of any discussion around the topic was a missed opportunity. This oversight became even more critical later in the game when the Rams opted for an extra point to make it 31-27 and subsequently faced a fourth-and-4 situation from the Seahawks” 6-yard line with 4:59 left in the game.
Traina noted, “If the Rams had kicked a field goal earlier, they could have kicked one here to tie the game.” He also pointed out that a field goal would have put the Rams at a 31-30 deficit, potentially setting them up for a game-winning field goal on their next possession.
This analysis highlights an area where Brady can enhance his broadcasting skills, ensuring that he provides viewers with a deeper understanding of critical decisions during the game.
