The Pittsburgh Steelers have begun their search for a new offensive coordinator, kicking off the process with interviews.
After announcing Mike McCarthy as their new head coach, the Steelers are looking to revitalize their offense. McCarthy, who has over 30 years of experience in the NFL, is focused on building a strong coaching staff to enhance the team”s performance.
According to reports from Adam Schefter, the Steelers are set to interview Lunda Wells, the tight ends coach for the Dallas Cowboys. Schefter noted on social media, “Cowboys tight ends coach Lunda Wells is expected to interview this week for the Steelers offensive coordinator job.” Wells worked alongside McCarthy in Dallas for five years and recently interviewed for the offensive coordinator position with the Washington Commanders as well. He is also the head coach of the West team for the East-West Shrine game.
Wells comes with more than 10 years of coaching experience in the NFL, along with a notable stint in college football at Louisiana State University (LSU). His prior experience includes eight seasons with the New York Giants, where he served in various coaching roles before joining the Cowboys in 2020 on McCarthy”s staff.
Under Wells” guidance, several tight ends have made significant progress, contributing to the Cowboys” success, including three seasons with 12 wins. If Wells is selected as the Steelers” offensive coordinator, fans can anticipate an enhanced performance from the tight end position, particularly with talented players like Darnell Washington and Pat Freiermuth on the roster.
During his time in Dallas, tight end Dalton Schultz emerged as a top-tier player. In his first season under Wells and McCarthy, Schultz accumulated over 650 receiving yards and followed that up with more than 800 yards the next year. Wells also played a crucial role in the development of Jake Ferguson, who had a breakout season in 2023 with over 700 yards and eight touchdowns.
With the Steelers” current roster featuring promising tight ends, Wells” appointment could lead to a more productive offensive strategy focused on utilizing these playmakers. His expertise in player evaluation is another asset, making him a valuable candidate for the Steelers as they look to improve their offensive capabilities.
