Iowa Hawkeyes quarterback Mark Gronowski significantly enhanced his NFL draft prospects by being named the MVP of the East-West Shrine Bowl. Originally slated to participate in the American Bowl, Gronowski made a pivotal choice to instead join the Shrine Bowl, a decision that proved beneficial as he reunited with wide receiver and return specialist Kaden Wetjen for one last game.
During the contest, the fifth-year senior completed 7 of 10 passes for 86 yards and added 28 rushing yards, while also providing crucial blocks for a rushing touchdown. His impressive performance earned him the offensive MVP title, underscoring the talent he possesses. Despite a slow start to his season with the Hawkeyes, Gronowski has demonstrated that he is a viable quarterback option. Transitioning from FCS to FBS is no small feat, and Gronowski”s achievements in the Shrine Bowl highlight his adaptability.
Earlier in the day, he had also been recognized on the “All-Practice” team, which further reflected his preparedness and skill. The Shrine Bowl, broadcast on the NFL Network, attracted numerous scouts from various NFL teams, all eager to evaluate potential draft candidates.
While Gronowski”s college statistics may not be eye-popping, and expectations for him to be selected in the early rounds remain low, he could very well serve as an excellent backup for any team in need. “I gotta say thanks to all the coaches that helped us out this week,” Gronowski stated. “They spent a lot of time helping us and watching film. They really helped me see defenses better and just gameplan a little better.”
Throughout the week of practice leading up to the game, Gronowski received positive feedback from coaches and scouts alike, culminating in a standout performance during the game itself. Although it is difficult to envision him being drafted higher than the later rounds, Gronowski”s potential seems reminiscent of Brock Purdy, who made headlines as “Mr. Irrelevant” after being the last pick in the previous draft. While Gronowski and Purdy may not be identical players, the comparison serves as a commendation of Gronowski”s potential path as a quarterback.
