Penn State defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton has spoken out in support of James Franklin, who was recently hired as the head coach at Virginia Tech. This reflection comes after Franklin”s dismissal from Penn State.
During a workout session at Hancock Whitney Stadium on March 6, 2025, Dennis-Sutton shared his feelings about Franklin”s departure, noting, “It was tough when Coach Franklin left. Obviously, it was an unfortunate situation. But I”m happy for Coach Franklin and his family. He”s happy there. He found a new home, a place that appreciates him. So I”m happy for him.”
Having been recruited and developed by Franklin, Dennis-Sutton was part of a prominent 2022 recruiting class at Penn State that included several top talents. After a disappointing season that saw the Nittany Lions start 3-3, Franklin was let go, leading to the hiring of Matt Campbell as the new head coach.
Despite the changes, Dennis-Sutton remains optimistic. He stated, “I”m a Virginia Tech fan now, except when they play Penn State, obviously. But I”m happy for Coach Franklin. That”s my guy.”
Fortunately for Dennis-Sutton, Penn State and Virginia Tech are not scheduled to meet in the near future, which alleviates any conflict of interest. Additionally, with Penn State”s non-conference schedule not including South Carolina, he won”t face divided loyalties there either.
After Franklin”s exit, many of his coaching staff members followed him to Virginia Tech, including Deion Barnes, who was a mentor to Dennis-Sutton. Dennis-Sutton described Barnes as “like a big brother to me,” emphasizing the ongoing support he receives from him as he prepares for the upcoming NFL draft.
As Dennis-Sutton trains for the draft at the Senior Bowl, he continues to reflect on his time at Penn State and the impact that Franklin and his coaching staff had on his development as a player.
