Kevin Stefanski Discusses Bye Week and Jets Preparation

Cleveland Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski held a media session at CrossCountry Mortgage on Wednesday, focusing on the team”s preparations following their bye week and their upcoming matchup against the New York Jets.

“It”s back to work week, Wednesday. We have a great opportunity ahead of us—a road game against an AFC opponent. We are looking forward to the challenge,” Stefanski stated. He noted that both teams are coming off a bye week, with the Jets riding high after a recent victory. “Our goal is to perform at our best on the road and secure a win. We are focusing on applying the lessons we”ve learned during the bye week across offense, defense, and special teams,” he added.

When asked about the Jets” recent trades and how they might affect the Browns” offensive strategy, Stefanski responded, “It doesn”t change our approach. They have talented players, and I have great respect for their coaching staff. We must focus on our performance.” He emphasized that despite the changes, the Jets still possess a formidable roster.

Regarding the Jets” quarterback situation, Stefanski acknowledged the challenge of preparing for two capable players, saying, “Both Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor bring different threats to the table. Fields is incredibly fast and can make big plays both in the air and on the ground, while Taylor is a seasoned veteran who operates effectively.” He underscored the need for the Browns to be ready for either quarterback.

Stefanski also discussed the significance of the bye week for player rejuvenation. “Regardless of timing, it”s essential to recharge. Our players took full advantage of it, especially with a challenging nine-game stretch ahead,” he noted.

On the topic of quarterback Dillon Gabriel, Stefanski stated that the entire offense must improve. “We all need to elevate our game, from the quarterback to the coaching staff. It”s about putting everyone in the best position to succeed,” he said.

Reflecting on self-evaluation during the bye week, Stefanski remarked, “You don”t wait for the bye to assess your team. It”s a continuous process. However, the bye does offer a chance to analyze our performance from different angles, which can lead to valuable insights.” He highlighted the importance of distilling those insights into actionable strategies.

Addressing the recent trade deadline, he expressed confidence in the current roster, saying, “I believe in this team, and the players are focused on our goals moving forward.” He acknowledged that while trade speculations can circulate, the team”s concentration remains on performance.

As for the new play-calling arrangement with offensive coordinator Tommy Rees, Stefanski confirmed that Rees would have more control over the game plan. “It”s imperative for a play caller to feel comfortable with their call sheet. This week, I”m allowing Tommy to take the lead while I provide support and suggestions,” he explained.

On the subject of Gabriel”s development, Stefanski believes the bye week could be beneficial for a rookie quarterback. “It gives everyone a chance to catch their breath, especially one who has faced tough situations early in the season. Improvements are crucial, and we must all work towards that,” he said.

Finally, Stefanski addressed the running game, noting that while Quinshon has performed adequately, other backs need to step up. He stated, “We like our current players and will explore different combinations to maximize our effectiveness.” As for injury updates, he confirmed that Isaiah would not practice due to a foot injury, but further details on his status were pending.
