UCLA Women”s Basketball Faces Tough Challenge Against Iowa at Pauley Pavilion

In a critical matchup, the UCLA women”s basketball team, ranked No. 2, prepares to host the No. 8 Iowa Hawkeyes this Sunday at Pauley Pavilion. Following an unexpectedly close game against Illinois, the Bruins are seeking to apply the lessons learned from that encounter.

UCLA has generally dominated its Big Ten schedule, boasting an impressive average win margin of 22.9 points. However, their recent game against Illinois tested their mettle, forcing them to make crucial adjustments and maintain composure under pressure. “There was really great value,” said Bruins head coach Cori Close during practice on Friday. “We were challenged and had to practice poise, making adjustments to their strategies.”

In a tense fourth quarter, every possession counted. The Bruins had to focus on their free throws and adapt to Illinois” unique defensive approach, which marked a shift from how previous teams had defended their post players. The Illini were the first team to defend UCLA”s 6-foot-7 center Lauren Betts with a one-on-one strategy, which forced the Bruins to rethink their game plan. Betts, along with her sister Sienna Betts, responded effectively, combining for 33 points, with Lauren scoring nine crucial points in the final quarter.

“They threw some different things at us that we didn”t necessarily see this season. And that”s great for us,” remarked Bruins guard Charlisse Leger-Walker about their opponents. In the fourth quarter, Lauren Betts also contributed three free throws as the team finished 23 of 27 from the line, showcasing their improvement in this critical area.

Senior Kiki Rice highlighted the significance of playing in a challenging environment, stating, “Everything”s not going to be easy for us.” The Bruins learned valuable lessons from the experience, especially how to respond quickly in high-pressure situations.

As they look ahead to their game against Iowa, the Bruins recognize the challenge posed by the Hawkeyes, who have a solid record against ranked opponents. Iowa”s sophomore Ava Heiden leads the team in points and rebounds, while forward Hannah Steulke has been a consistent scorer, contributing to their success this season.

Close expressed her respect for Iowa and their head coach, emphasizing their understanding of identity and strengths. The winner of this matchup will gain an advantage in the Big Ten standings, making this game crucial for both teams.

UCLA”s recent close contest should serve them well as they prepare for this pivotal challenge against Iowa.
