The recruitment landscape for the nation”s third-ranked quarterback is becoming increasingly competitive. As the 2027 recruiting season intensifies, elite prospects are receiving scholarship offers at an astonishing rate. A prime example is Israel Abrams, a highly regarded quarterback from the Chicago area, who has already accumulated at least 20 offers from various college football programs.
Ranked as the No. 3 quarterback nationally by On3Sports and No. 2 by 247Sports, Abrams is making headlines with his impressive performances on the field. During his sophomore season in 2024, he threw for over 2,000 yards and 29 touchdowns, and he significantly improved in 2025, totaling 4,296 yards and 50 touchdowns. Standing at 6″4″, Abrams possesses the ideal size and arm strength to excel as a pocket passer at the collegiate level.
According to expert analysis from On3Sports, Iowa State is currently in the lead for Abrams”s recruitment, although he has attracted attention from a wide array of major programs. In the Big Ten, defending champions Indiana, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Purdue, Rutgers, Michigan State, Maryland, and local contender Northwestern have all extended offers. Additionally, several SEC schools, including Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Auburn, Arkansas, and Ole Miss, are also in the mix.
On3Sports highlights that Abrams has already made six unofficial visits to Iowa State, where new head coach Jimmy Rogers has taken over for the successful Matt Campbell. Although Penn State has not yet offered Abrams, he has visited both Minnesota and Tennessee three times each. His latest visit was to Auburn in mid-January.
247Sports ranks Abrams just behind Louisiana prep standout Elijah Haven as a four-star recruit and lists him as the No. 22 player in the nation. In On3″s rankings, Abrams is positioned as the No. 44 player, also holding a four-star rating. With the anticipated departure of Rocco Becht via the transfer portal after following Campbell to Penn State, Arkansas State transfer Jaylen Raynor is expected to be the starting quarterback for Iowa State in 2026. This development could pave the way for Abrams to step in as a true freshman in 2027.
As the competition heats up for Abrams”s commitment, it is clear that Iowa State will face increasing challenges from other programs vying for his talent.
