The first round of the City Section flag football playoffs has concluded with several exciting matchups. Teams battled fiercely on the field, showcasing their skills and determination to advance in the tournament.
In the Division I playoffs, the 16th-seeded Venice team pulled off a surprising victory against the top-seeded Jefferson, winning 20-13. The 8th-seeded Carson team also advanced by defeating the 9th-seeded LA Roosevelt with a score of 20-7. Other notable results included the 5th-seeded Franklin team shutting out the 12th-seeded Granada Hills Kennedy 12-0, while the 13th-seeded Sylmar triumphed over the 4th-seeded Legacy, winning 20-6.
Furthermore, the 3rd-seeded Birmingham team secured a win against the 14th-seeded GALA with a score of 32-13. The 11th-seeded El Camino Real edged out the 6th-seeded King/Drew 25-16, and the 7th-seeded Garfield defeated the 10th-seeded Cleveland by a narrow margin of 16-10. Finally, the 2nd-seeded Bell team dominated the 15th-seeded Santee, finishing with a score of 32-6.
In Division II, the top-seeded Sun Valley Magnet team overpowered the 16th-seeded Dorsey, winning 33-6. The 9th-seeded South East team also advanced with a convincing 34-12 victory over the 8th-seeded Bernstein. The 3rd-seeded San Fernando team achieved a dominant win against the 14th-seeded Fremont, finishing 35-0. Other games included the 13th-seeded Mendez team defeating the 4th-seeded Stern 38-6.
In Division III, the top-seeded South Gate narrowly defeated the 16th-seeded Hollywood with a score of 13-6. The 9th-seeded Van Nuys managed to edge out the 8th-seeded Taft 12-6, while the 12th-seeded Monroe dominated the 5th-seeded Orthopaedic team, winning 31-12. The 3rd-seeded LA Hamilton also advanced with a 32-18 victory against the 14th-seeded WISH Academy.
Looking ahead, the quarterfinals are set to take place this Friday at 3 PM, featuring several exciting matchups across all divisions. The Open Division will see the 8th-seeded Verdugo Hills face off against the top-seeded San Pedro, while the 5th-seeded Wilmington Banning takes on the 4th-seeded LA Marshall. The Division I matchups include Venice against Carson and Sylmar competing against Franklin.
As the playoffs continue, the anticipation builds for the semifinals, which are scheduled for November 12 at the higher seeds” locations, followed by the finals on November 15 at Garfield High School.
