As Klint Kubiak prepares to take the helm as head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders, attention is turning to the potential candidates for the defensive coordinator position on his inaugural staff. Kubiak, who has spent his entire career focused on offense, has a clear vision for that side of the ball but faces a more challenging task in identifying the right leader for the defense.
With Kubiak expected to be officially named head coach shortly after he leads the Seattle Seahawks offense in the Super Bowl against the New England Patriots, he will soon begin the process of assembling his coaching staff. While Kubiak is likely to call plays on offense and dedicate a significant amount of time to that unit, the defensive coordinator will need to manage the defense independently.
Among the candidates being considered is Aden Durde, the current defensive coordinator for the Seahawks. His familiarity with Kubiak from their time together could make him a prime candidate, though it remains uncertain whether Seattle would allow him to leave. While such a move would be viewed as a lateral shift, it could also be considered a promotion due to the play-calling responsibilities involved.
Jim Schwartz, the defensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns, also comes with a strong resume. Known for his play-calling acumen, Schwartz has achieved success across various teams and player rosters. However, he is still under contract with the Browns, who may be hesitant to let him go, particularly after he was a finalist for their head coach position.
If Kubiak is unable to bring Durde to Las Vegas, Karl Scott, the Seahawks defensive backs coach and passing game coordinator, may be a viable alternative. Kubiak has worked with Scott previously and could look to incorporate elements of the Seahawks” strong defensive strategy into the Raiders” scheme.
Joe Woods presents an intriguing option as well. Currently serving as the Raiders” defensive passing game coordinator, Woods has prior experience as a defensive coordinator with the Broncos, Browns, and Saints. His established relationship with Kubiak, who was the offensive coordinator in New Orleans during Woods” tenure, could facilitate a smooth transition.
Lastly, George Edwards, the defensive passing game coordinator for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has ties to Raiders general manager John Spytek and has previously served as the defensive coordinator for the Minnesota Vikings. His familiarity with Kubiak”s coaching style makes him another strong candidate for the role.
As the Raiders look to solidify their coaching staff, selecting the right defensive coordinator will be crucial for Kubiak”s success in Las Vegas.
