The Philadelphia Eagles faced significant changes in their roster as they prepared for the 2025 season. The departure of key defensive players such as Milton Williams, Josh Sweat, Brandon Graham, Darius Slay, and CJ Gardner-Johnson left a noticeable gap. Despite the challenges, the Eagles managed to bring in new talent like Jaelan Phillips during the season, maintaining a competitive defense overall. However, the loss of such experienced players was a tough blow.
The upcoming Super Bowl will feature the New England Patriots against the Seattle Seahawks, with Williams aiming for his second consecutive championship ring. After signing a four-year, $104 million contract with the Patriots, Williams has continued to demonstrate his skills, having recorded five sacks during the previous regular season. His standout moment came during Super Bowl LIX, where he made a significant impact with two sacks, helping the Eagles secure a win against the Kansas City Chiefs.
In a conversation with Jeff McLane of The Philadelphia Inquirer, Williams shared his thoughts on leaving Philadelphia. “That was when all the players sign the Super Bowl merch,” Williams recounted. “Roseman”s message was like, “Get the most you can.” Once I heard that — and meanwhile I was talking to my agent about the deal — I thought, “They”re probably not going to offer.”” This exchange was later confirmed by an Eagles spokesperson.
Williams expressed his disappointment about leaving the Eagles, stating, “We had just won a Super Bowl. Of course, I didn”t want to leave. But I got to do what”s best for me. They had their agenda of what they wanted to accomplish, and I wasn”t part of it. So they let me go.”
Fortunately for the Eagles, they had young defensive lineman Moro Ojomo ready to step up. The 24-year-old had not recorded a sack in his first two seasons, but with an expanded role in 2025, he achieved six sacks. Despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding Williams” departure, both he and the Eagles have found ways to benefit from the situation.
As the Super Bowl approaches, the focus will remain on how players like Williams adapt to their new teams and the impact of roster changes on both the Eagles and the Patriots.
