Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle has been fined $14,491 for his exuberant touchdown celebration featuring two pelvic thrusts, reminiscent of a popular comedy sketch. This incident occurred during the Panthers” Week 9 victory against the Green Bay Packers, where Dowdle scored a 1-yard touchdown in the third quarter.
After the touchdown, Dowdle was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct as he engaged in the celebration with several teammates. Following reports from ESPN and NBA Sports, the fine was confirmed to be linked to the two-pump celebration style that echoed a skit from the “Key & Peele” show, in which a fictional NFL player named McCringleberry was similarly penalized for a two-pump celebration.
In response to the fine, Dowdle announced on X that he would be launching a GoFundMe campaign aimed at raising the penalty amount for charity. He expressed his intent to donate the funds to the Children”s Home Society of North Carolina, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ensuring that every child has a safe and loving family. Within hours, the fundraiser had already amassed close to $9,000.
Interestingly, in another game during Week 9, players from the New England Patriots performed a “one pump” celebration without facing any penalties or fines. NBC Sports” Mike Florio noted, “It seems for the NFL, two pumps is one too many,” highlighting the inconsistency in officiating regarding touchdown celebrations.
On November 5, Dowdle shared on X, “Starting a GoFundMe 🤣 they got me 🥹,” explaining his partnership with GoFundMe to turn his fine into a positive contribution. He further stated, “After much thought, I”ve launched a GoFundMe for my fines. Key said I got three pumps but I guess the NFL disagrees. Actually, 100% of what is raised through this fundraiser will be sent to the Children”s Home Society of North Carolina.”
Responses from fans varied widely. Some referenced the “Key & Peele” sketch, questioning the fairness of the penalty, while others noted that similar celebrations had gone unpunished in the past. One fan commented, “As a Packers fan…. it was only two pumps!” Another remarked on the inconsistency, recalling that even Aaron Rodgers had performed similar celebrations without receiving a flag.
This incident has sparked discussions about the NFL”s stance on celebrations and the enforcement of penalties, particularly when it appears that some players may receive leniency compared to others.
