The Super Bowl stands as the most significant sporting event in the United States each year. However, many fans may wonder how this iconic name came to be.
Initially, NFL Commissioner Pete Rozelle proposed calling the game the “AFL-NFL World Championship Game,” but that lengthy title failed to gain traction. During discussions among team owners, Lamar Hunt Jr., the son of the late Kansas City Chiefs owner Lamar Hunt, contributed an intriguing idea inspired by a children”s toy.
Hunt Jr. recounted that his father was inspired by a toy called the “Super Ball.” He recalled, “My dad was in an owner”s meeting. They were trying to figure out what to call the last game, the championship game. I don”t know if he had the ball with him as some reports suggest. My dad said, “Well, we need to come up with a name, something like the “Super Bowl.” And then he said, “Actually, that”s not a very good name. We can come up with something better.” But “Super Bowl” stuck in the media and word of mouth.”
This is how the Super Bowl became the cherished name for America”s largest sporting event, a title that resonates with fans across the nation.
