In a significant move for both the player and the franchise, Justin Verlander is making a noteworthy return to the Detroit Tigers after spending his initial 13 seasons with the team. According to ESPN”s Jeff Passan, the veteran right-hander has agreed to a one-year contract with the Tigers. This deal, reported to be worth $13 million with $11 million deferred, allows Verlander to continue his illustrious career, which has already secured him a place in the Hall of Fame.
Verlander, who will turn 43 on February 20, has the opportunity to add his vast experience to a Tigers pitching staff that features other star pitchers, including two-time Cy Young Award winner Tarik Skubal and the highly sought-after free agent Framber Valdez. Notably, Verlander and Valdez were teammates during their time with the Houston Astros and will now reunite in Detroit.
Last season, Verlander demonstrated that he still possesses the ability to compete at a high level, posting a 3.85 ERA over 29 starts with the San Francisco Giants. While he may not be the overpowering ace he once was, his experience and skill make him a valuable addition to the Tigers” rotation. With Skubal and Valdez potentially leading the starting lineup, Verlander is positioned to contribute effectively at the back end of the rotation.
Throughout his storied career, Verlander has accumulated numerous accolades, including two World Series championships, three Cy Young awards, an AL MVP award, an ALCS MVP award, nine All-Star selections, and an AL Rookie of the Year award. He is also recognized as one of only six pitchers to have thrown three no-hitters, which underscores his remarkable talent and longevity in the game.
As the 2026 season unfolds, this may very well be the final chapter in Verlander”s legendary career, making it fitting that he returns to the organization where it all began for him in Detroit.
