Miami Dolphins Entrust Rebuild to New Head Coach Jeff Hafley

The Miami Dolphins are placing their hopes for a turnaround in the hands of new head coach Jeff Hafley. This offseason is shaping up to be pivotal, with key questions surrounding the future of QB1 and star receiver Tyreek Hill.

Hafley, who becomes the 12th head coach in the franchise”s history, is teaming up with new general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan to address the team”s long-standing playoff struggles. The Dolphins have not won a playoff game since 2000, marking the longest active drought in the NFL. Dolphins owner Stephen Ross expressed his confidence in Hafley, stating, “I believe great things are ahead for the Miami Dolphins with Jeff Hafley leading the way. Jeff is an accomplished coach with a proven track record as a leader and motivator.”

Hafley succeeds Mike McDaniel, who had a promising start, guiding the Dolphins to the playoffs in his first two seasons. However, after two consecutive losing seasons, Ross opted for a “comprehensive change” and dismissed McDaniel following his fourth year in charge. Ross thanked McDaniel for his contributions, highlighting his creativity and passion for the game.

Prior to joining the Dolphins, Hafley served as the defensive coordinator for the Green Bay Packers, where his defense ranked favorably across various categories in 2024. Despite facing injury challenges, his unit managed to secure a position among the top half of the league in total defense and passing defense. Hafley”s previous experience includes a successful tenure as head coach at Boston College, where he led the team to bowl eligibility in three of four seasons.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur praised Hafley”s communication skills and leadership style, noting his ability to connect with players while maintaining high expectations. “I love his demeanor. I love his passion for football, his passion for people,” LaFleur remarked.

As Hafley and Sullivan prepare for the offseason, the quarterback position looms large. Tua Tagovailoa, who struggled with turnovers last season, was demoted to emergency third-string quarterback in the final weeks of 2025. Tagovailoa has indicated he may be open to exploring new opportunities, although his injury history and substantial contract could complicate any potential move. Hafley emphasized the need for a quarterback who demonstrates mental and physical prowess, stating, “I want a winner.”

Additionally, the future of Tyreek Hill is uncertain after he sustained a season-ending injury last year. With speculation about his potential release due to age and salary cap implications, the Dolphins face a difficult decision. The NFL is also conducting an investigation into domestic violence allegations made against Hill, which he has denied.

At his introductory press conference, Hafley made a commitment to fostering a culture of trust and accountability within the organization. “To the city, to the fans — this is a storied organization, one of the best in all sports, and you deserve a winner,” he asserted. “I am going to do everything in my power to bring you guys that.”
