Brian Fleury, a former quarterback for the University of Maryland, has been appointed as the new offensive coordinator for the Seattle Seahawks. This decision was confirmed on Sunday and comes as a significant advancement in Fleury”s coaching career.
Fleury replaces Klint Kubiak, who departed to take on the head coaching role for the Las Vegas Raiders. His hiring follows a notable seven-season tenure with the San Francisco 49ers under head coach Kyle Shanahan. The offensive system that Fleury has cultivated is closely aligned with the one that Kubiak implemented in Seattle, which helped the Seahawks achieve a Super Bowl appearance last season and secure a third-place finish in the NFL for points per game.
Having established himself as a standout player at Seneca Valley High School in Germantown, Fleury led his team to a state championship during his senior year in 1997. He began his college football journey as a walk-on at Maryland before transferring to Towson University, where he played from 1999 to 2002. After concluding his playing career, Fleury transitioned into coaching at the collegiate level, serving at Sacred Heart and Towson before breaking into the NFL in 2013 as a quality control coach with the Buffalo Bills.
His subsequent roles included positions with the Cleveland Browns and the Miami Dolphins, where he contributed in football research and analytics. Fleury joined the 49ers in 2019 as a defensive quality control coach, moving to the offensive side of the ball in 2020 and ascending to the role of tight ends coach in 2022, while also taking on the responsibilities of run game coordinator this past season. His expertise in developing tight ends and coordinating the run game significantly aided the 49ers in becoming one of the league”s most effective and balanced offenses.
The new head coach of the Seahawks, Mike Macdonald, who comes from a defensive background, aimed for continuity on offense following Kubiak”s exit. Fleury”s experience and familiarity with the offensive system allow him to maintain the team”s identity while injecting new energy into the scheme. Additionally, Fleury has established connections with the Seahawks” new coaching staff, having worked with new defensive coordinator Rob Leonard during their time together with the Baltimore Ravens in 2022, which should facilitate a smooth transition.
Although Fleury has never called plays at either the collegiate or NFL level, his extensive experience within the system provides him with a well-rounded perspective. The Seahawks considered several internal candidates, such as quarterbacks coach Andrew Janocko, who is anticipated to join Kubiak in Las Vegas, and passing game coordinator Jake Peetz, among others. Ultimately, the Seahawks opted for Fleury, whose journey from walk-on quarterback to NFL offensive coordinator exemplifies determination and strategic career choices.
Looking ahead to the 2026 season, Fleury”s appointment signifies a new wave of leadership for the Seahawks. His ability to foster talent will be crucial as he works with standout players like running back Kenneth Walker III and a strong receiving corps. With the Seahawks finishing among the league”s top offenses in 2025, Fleury is expected to uphold the strong foundation while enhancing the team”s performance.
