The Texas A&M women”s basketball team shocked No. 21 Tennessee, achieving their first ranked road victory since 2011. This win continues a remarkable late-season resurgence, with the Aggies capturing three victories in their last four Southeastern Conference (SEC) games.
Despite a challenging season that saw the Aggies (11–11, 4–9 SEC) endure multiple significant losses in conference play, recent performances indicate a shift in momentum. Earlier in the season, the team struggled, with their promising start fading by mid-January. However, over the past two weeks, they have shown signs of rediscovering their identity, notching wins against two ranked opponents.
The latest triumph against Tennessee came on the road, where the Aggies displayed a well-rounded performance. They shot an impressive 55.9% from the field and 57.9% from beyond the arc, consistently responding to Tennessee”s scoring runs with critical baskets. This collective effort was characterized by 12 steals, 18 assists, and three players reaching double figures in scoring.
A pivotal moment occurred in the third quarter when Texas A&M outscored the Lady Vols 22–9, establishing a lead substantial enough to withstand a late-game push from Tennessee. Although the Aggies were outscored 23–13 in the fourth quarter, they maintained their composure to secure an 82–74 victory.
Head coach Joni Taylor has faced significant criticism this season, some of which has been justified. However, she deserves recognition for stabilizing the team and guiding them to crucial victories, particularly during a time when their season could have easily unraveled. With only three regular-season games remaining, the Aggies now have a chance to finish above .500. Should they manage to secure a win or two in the upcoming SEC Tournament, an appearance in the National Invitation Tournament (NIT)—once deemed unlikely—could now be a realistic goal.
