Texans” Free Agency Plans Impacted as Javonte Williams Re-signs with Cowboys

In a significant move for the Dallas Cowboys, running back Javonte Williams has officially signed a three-year contract extension worth $24 million. This deal, which includes $16 million guaranteed and a $6 million signing bonus, comes after Williams” impressive season in Arlington, according to reports from ESPN”s Adam Schefter.

Williams, who previously signed a one-year, $3 million deal with the Cowboys prior to the last season, achieved career-best numbers in rushing yards, carries, and touchdowns during his tenure. He recorded 252 carries for 1,201 yards and scored 11 rushing touchdowns. After struggling with injuries in previous seasons, he managed to stay healthy last year, a crucial factor in his performance.

The re-signing of Williams leaves the Houston Texans searching for options to bolster their running game heading into the 2026 season. Pro Bowl running back Joe Mixon was sidelined for the entire prior season due to a lower-body injury sustained in the offseason. Currently, the only running back returning under contract is Woody Marks, who is better suited for a secondary role rather than serving as the primary ball carrier.

With Williams now off the market, the Texans will need to explore other potential free agents to fill their roster gaps. Among the top running backs available are Kenneth Walker of the Seattle Seahawks, Breece Hall from the New York Jets, Travis Etienne Jr. of the Jacksonville Jaguars, Rico Dowdle from the Carolina Panthers, and Tyler Allgeier of the Atlanta Falcons.

As the Texans look to address their rushing issues, they will have to act quickly, especially with several key running backs now off the board.
