Ronyell Whitaker, a former defensive back in the NFL, has tragically passed away at the age of 46. The news was confirmed by his family in a statement shared through the Minnesota Vikings.
“The Whitaker family is heartbroken to share the passing of our beloved son, brother, and friend, Ronyell Deshawn Whitaker, who departed this life on February 22, 2026,” the statement revealed.
Born on March 19, 1979, Ronyell”s life was characterized by his passion for football and his resilience. He started his football journey at Lake Taylor High School in Norfolk, Virginia, before moving on to play for the Virginia Tech Hokies. His athletic ability, commitment, and leadership left an indelible mark on his teams.
The Vikings expressed their sorrow over Whitaker”s passing, emphasizing the impact he had on those around him. An official cause of death has yet to be disclosed.
“While many knew him for his athletic accomplishments, those closest to him cherished his generous spirit, loyalty, and profound love for family,” the family continued. “He was a protector, a mentor, and a source of strength and laughter to all who had the blessing of knowing him.”
Whitaker entered the NFL as an undrafted rookie with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and later showcased his talent with the Rhein Fire in NFL Europe, where he earned All-NFL Europe honors during the 2006 season. He concluded his professional career with a stint back in the NFL, playing for the Vikings.
