Raiders Promote Rob Leonard to Defensive Coordinator After Coaching Changes

The Las Vegas Raiders have made a significant move by promoting Rob Leonard to the position of defensive coordinator, bringing some much-needed stability to their coaching staff. This decision comes in the wake of Patrick Graham leaving the team after four seasons, a period that provided some consistency for the Raiders in a time marked by frequent changes.

In a recent evaluation by Bryan DeArdo from CBS Sports, Leonard”s promotion received a grade of “B-“. DeArdo noted that while Leonard is a seasoned NFL coach, this marks his inaugural role as a defensive coordinator. During the past season, Leonard served as the run game coordinator and defensive line coach, helping the Raiders achieve impressive defensive statistics, including a second-place finish in the NFL for average yards per rush allowed and a third-place ranking in tackles for loss.

A key factor in this decision is Leonard”s strong relationship with Maxx Crosby, the Raiders” standout defensive player who was named to his fifth Pro Bowl last season while working with Leonard. With Crosby”s future in question, it seems prudent for the Raiders to appoint a coach whom he trusts and respects. However, DeArdo expressed some reservations, highlighting the risks associated with a head coach hiring a first-time coordinator, especially in a defensive role when the head coach”s expertise lies elsewhere.

Despite the concerns regarding Leonard”s untested status as a defensive coordinator, it is crucial to allow him time to develop the defense further and to assess the Raiders” overall strategy. The team is expected to enhance its defensive roster, which will influence how effectively Leonard can implement his coaching. Upon his hiring as head coach, Kubiak articulated the qualities he seeks in a defensive coordinator, emphasizing the importance of establishing a physical style of play.

Kubiak stated, “I think whoever that coach is, it”ll be really important that we establish a style of play, a physical style of play, and that”s offense and defense. So, I”m just way more worried about how our guys play than opposed to the X”s and O”s of it all.” He further emphasized the significance of effort and technique, insisting that it is vital for the coordinator to instill a culture of hard work and accountability among the players.
