Patrick Toney, the defensive coordinator for the Ole Miss Rebels, is set to leave his position in Oxford to join the Atlanta Falcons as their defensive pass game coordinator. This transition comes shortly after Toney was appointed to Pete Golding“s coaching staff in January.
Golding, who has recently been named head coach, took on defensive coordinator duties during Ole Miss”s run in the College Football Playoff. Following the conclusion of the season, he promptly brought Toney on board. “I”m the defensive coordinator,” Golding stated in December. “Nothing has changed on who”s calling plays.” He acknowledged that while his responsibilities in the defensive room have shifted, he is still heavily involved in calling plays.
Golding expressed confidence in Bryan Brown, who has been co-defensive coordinator, stating that Brown will take on a more significant role in managing the defense. “I love calling defense,” Golding remarked. “Feel like I do a decent job at it. That”s not going to change.” He emphasized that while Brown would help with practice scripting, the overall defensive system and terminology will remain consistent.
With plans to find a new defensive coordinator for the upcoming season, Ole Miss had identified Toney as a strong candidate due to his experience in both the SEC and the NFL. Before joining Ole Miss, Toney served as the safeties coach for the Arizona Cardinals and has a diverse coaching background that includes stints at Florida, Jacksonville State, Sam Houston State, and Southeastern Louisiana.
Ultimately, Toney”s prior working relationship with Golding played a key role in his move to Ole Miss. Now, as he transitions back to the NFL, Toney is expected to bring his expertise to the Falcons, where he will focus on enhancing their defensive strategies.
As Ole Miss looks ahead, the program aims to continue strengthening its coaching staff while preparing for the upcoming season. This change marks a significant shift in the Rebels” defensive structure and presents an opportunity for growth under new leadership.
