Broncos Eye Free-Agent Running Backs as Offseason Approaches

The Denver Broncos are preparing to enhance their running back position as free agency approaches in two weeks. Recent reports indicate that Aaron Jones, currently with the Minnesota Vikings, is set to enter the market after the Vikings plan to release him unless a trade occurs.

At 31 years old, Jones may no longer be considered a top-tier running back. After signing a two-year, $20 million deal with the Vikings last offseason, he faced a hamstring injury that sidelined him for five games. His performance on the field also declined, totaling 548 rushing yards and two touchdowns, alongside 28 receptions for 199 yards and another score. While he excels as a receiver out of the backfield, his age could limit his market appeal significantly.

Despite potential interest, it is unlikely that Jones will command a salary in the range of $10 million per year, especially given his injury history from the previous season. The wear and tear of time can be particularly harsh on running backs, leading to increased susceptibility to injuries and longer recovery periods.

For the Broncos, pursuing Jones may not be the best course of action. RJ Harvey fits a similar profile and brings youth to the position. There is also the possibility of J.K. Dobbins hitting free agency. At 27, Dobbins comes with injury concerns but remains a viable option to balance the backfield alongside Harvey. Broncos General Manager George Paton expressed interest in retaining Dobbins, who has indicated a desire to return.

Even if Dobbins is brought back, the Broncos need to consider additional options due to his injury issues. Adding Jones as a backup option seems less appealing now that Harvey has established himself. When considering other available running backs like Breece Hall, Kenneth Walker III, and Tyler Allgeier, Jones falls lower on the priority list.

Ideally, the Broncos would secure Dobbins and recruit someone like Allgeier, who can provide consistent first and second-down production. This combination would allow Harvey to serve as a third-down option and create a robust running back lineup, potentially without hindering the team”s draft strategy.

The Broncos are also planning to re-sign Tyler Badie, while the future of Jaleel McLaughlin remains uncertain, as the team does not intend to tender him as a restricted free agent. As the offseason progresses, the need for a solid running back corps will be crucial to alleviating pressure off quarterback Bo Nix and enhancing the Broncos” offensive capabilities.
