The Houston Texans have taken steps to improve their salary cap situation by restructuring the contracts of two key defensive players, cornerback Derek Stingley Jr. and safety Jalen Pitre. This move comes as the team prepares for the upcoming free agency period.
Reports indicate that the Texans converted portions of both players” base salaries into signing bonuses. This strategic adjustment has successfully opened up more than $22 million in cap space while slightly increasing the future cap hits for both Stingley and Pitre.
Stingley, who is under contract through the 2029 season, has base salaries set at $20 million, $21 million, and $21 million for the final three years of his contract. The cap hits for these years are projected to be in the range of $29 million to $31 million. Meanwhile, Pitre”s contract includes salaries of $9.5 million for the 2027 and 2028 seasons, with cap hits of $14.557 million in both years.
This restructuring is part of a broader strategy for the Texans as they look to manage their finances effectively while retaining talented players. The moves not only provide immediate cap relief but also demonstrate the team”s commitment to maintaining a competitive roster.
