Rico Dowdle, a running back for the Carolina Panthers, is using a recent NFL fine to make a positive impact in his home state of North Carolina. Dowdle created a GoFundMe campaign following his fine, which was a result of a controversial touchdown celebration during a game against the Green Bay Packers.
The incident occurred in the third quarter of their Week 9 matchup at Lambeau Field, where Dowdle scored his second touchdown, helping the Panthers take a 7-point lead. In celebration, he performed a dance inspired by comedian Keegan-Michael Key, involving two pelvic thrusts dubbed the “two pump” celebration. This act of exuberance, however, drew a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct, leading to a fine reported to be $14,491.
Initially, Dowdle”s agent, David Canter, announced plans to appeal the fine. However, Dowdle soon pivoted to a more constructive approach. He announced the GoFundMe initiative on his social media account, first humorously stating it was to cover his fines, but quickly clarifying its true purpose: supporting the Children”s Home Society of North Carolina.
Dowdle, who hails from Gaffney, South Carolina, has deep ties to North Carolina, having made significant contributions to high school football as a standout player at A.C. Reynolds High School in Asheville. His GoFundMe page explains that “100% of what is raised through this fundraiser will be sent to Children”s Home Society of North Carolina,” an organization dedicated to ensuring that every child has access to a safe and loving family through various programs including education, family preservation, and adoption services.
Launched at 8:07 PM, the campaign quickly gained traction, raising nearly $10,000 within just a few hours. By noon the following day, contributions soared to approximately $17,500, with Dowdle setting a new goal of $20,000.
This creative response to an NFL fine highlights Dowdle”s commitment to giving back to the community while turning a potentially negative situation into a source of hope and support for children in need throughout North Carolina.
