Bill Barnwell Discusses Kirk Cousins as a Backup for the Packers

In the wake of losing Malik Willis to free agency, the Green Bay Packers are on the lookout for a reliable backup quarterback. ESPN”s Bill Barnwell has proposed that Kirk Cousins could be a good fit for the Packers in a recent piece focusing on the best team matches for top remaining free agents.

With Jordan Love having missed significant time due to injuries over the past two seasons, it is crucial for the Packers to secure a dependable backup to ensure playoff contention. Barnwell emphasized this need, stating that “The Packers have to be conscious of their need to have a backup they trust if Love can”t go.” He also noted that while Coach Matt LaFleur may seek a value option similar to the previous trade for Willis, Cousins could serve as a solid backup for Love in 2026.

At 38 years old, Cousins remains a competent player. Last season, he started for the Atlanta Falcons when they finished with an 8-9 record, recording a 5-3 record in games he started. He played a pivotal role in the team”s late-season success, including a four-game win streak that helped keep the Tampa Bay Buccaneers out of the playoffs.

Despite his impressive past, Cousins” performance has declined since suffering a torn Achilles while playing against the Packers at Lambeau Field in 2023. He completed 66.7 percent of his passes over his career, but last season saw him drop to just 61.7 percent, along with leading the NFL in interceptions.

Why would Cousins, a player with his background, willingly sign as a backup? This scenario seems unlikely. Although Love has faced injuries, he has managed to start most games in his tenure, and Cousins would more likely pursue a starting position with another team, possibly the Pittsburgh Steelers, or wait for better opportunities.

In terms of alternative candidates, the Packers could consider several players. The Tennessee Titans traded Malik Willis to Green Bay after acquiring Will Levis, the second-round pick from the 2023 draft. Levis has struggled statistically, ranking low in passer rating and completion percentage, but he could be acquired cheaply.

The Indianapolis Colts are reportedly looking to move Anthony Richardson, the fourth overall pick in the 2023 draft. Despite his poor statistics, Richardson possesses elite physical tools and has made notable plays.

Another name to watch is Jimmy Garoppolo, who has a strong starting record yet faced limited opportunities in recent seasons. He would bring valuable experience regarding the Packers” offensive system.

If the Packers are interested in drafting or trading for quarterbacks like Richardson or Levis, signing Zach Wilson could also be an option. The former second overall pick from the 2021 draft has struggled but has the potential to recover.

Among the options, Desmond Ridder, who the Packers signed late last season, might be the most favorable candidate. Ridder, a third-round pick by the Falcons in 2022, has had experience in the system and showed promise during his limited appearances.

Currently, the Packers” quarterback lineup includes Love, Ridder, and former Syracuse standout Kyle McCord, a sixth-round pick from last year. As the Packers navigate their options, finding a trustworthy backup will be essential for their playoff aspirations.
