The NFL offseason is buzzing with activity as players sign lucrative contracts and some take part in other sports. Recently, both Drew Brees and Tyler Shough, the current quarterback for the New Orleans Saints, showcased their baseball skills during a special event hosted by the Savannah Bananas at the Caesars Superdome. This marked the first instance since 2004 that the Superdome was converted into a baseball field, as highlighted by ESPN”s Katherine Terrell.
However, it wasn”t a spectacular play that captured the audience”s attention; instead, it was a remark from Shough that resonated with fans. He likened the vibrant atmosphere to the excitement of Saints playoff games, stating, “Words don”t describe it — this is like Saints playoffs right here. This is where we”ve got to get to — this is an unbelievable atmosphere.” Shough emphasized the energy of the fans and the diverse group of attendees, saying, “You see the fans” energy, you see everybody coming out to support, having a great time — people of all ages. It”s so cool to be a part of it.”
The event featured a transformation of the baseball field back to a football field, where Shough threw a touchdown pass to a performer from the Bananas. He lightheartedly noted, “We were able to get it done on third down. Credit to our guys for staying in there to go make the big play down on the right side.”
The sold-out crowd at the Superdome evoked memories of the Saints” last home playoff game on January 17, 2021, when the team faced the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the NFL Divisional Round. Shough and his teammates are eager to replicate that electric atmosphere during the upcoming season, aiming to earn the opportunity to host a game that matches the excitement of the Bananas” exhibition.
At 26 years old, Shough displayed promise during his rookie season, starting in nine games. If he maintains his current trajectory, he could emerge as a franchise quarterback for the Saints. Combined with several new signings in free agency by the Saints, the team is focused on returning to a competitive state, with aspirations of making playoff runs and contending for a Super Bowl, a feat they have not achieved since Brees led the team in the 2010s.
