The St. John Eagles, with a record of 8-9, celebrated a victory against Central Private while facing a setback against the formidable Vanderbilt Catholic last week in high school baseball. As the Eagles inch closer to the .500 mark, they prepare for the upcoming District 8-1A season.
In their game against Central Private, the Eagles secured an impressive 8-1 win. Pitcher Tyler Edwards was dominant on the mound, striking out nine batters and allowing only two hits over six innings. Relief pitcher Landon Daigle contributed to the victory by retiring two Redhawks. The Eagles established their lead early, scoring six runs in the second inning. Cy Crowson led the offense, hitting a double along with two singles, while his teammates Chrisian Dean, Daniel Braud, Jacob Ourso, and Nathan Burleigh also made significant contributions with their hits. Dillen Marbury showcased his speed by stealing two bases, and Braud, Ourso, Jesse Taylor, and Jacob Brerthelot each added a steal to the tally.
In contrast, the Eagles struggled against Vanderbilt Catholic, losing the game 7-2. The Terriers, boasting a strong record of 16-4, jumped to an early lead with two runs in the first inning. However, the Eagles fought back in the third inning when Edwards hit a leadoff triple, setting the stage for Burleigh to score. Marbury then tied the game with a run on a fastball. Despite a valiant effort, which included a walk by Crowson in the seventh inning, the Eagles could not complete the comeback as they were ultimately shut down by the Terriers.
Currently, the Eagles sit at 8-10 and are set to host Dunham on Thursday, March 19, at 5:30 PM, followed by a home game against South Lafourche on Saturday at 2 PM. They will also welcome North Iberville for a District 8-1A matchup on Tuesday, March 24, at 6 PM.
This recent performance marks a significant moment for the Eagles as they work to improve their standing in the upcoming district games.
